The Monkey King, also known as Sun Wukong, is a legendary figure from the 16th century novel "Journey to the West". In this story a monkey born from stone gains superpowers through Taoist practices and travels to India to retrieve the Buddhist Sutras. He is said to have mastered 72 magickal powers such as flying and shape-shifting and in some traditions of Tibetan lucid dreaming practices it is taught that one can and should master these 72 magickal powers in the dream world. Flying, invincibility and shapeshifting are quite useful when navigating the dream dimension.

He is considered by some scholars to be influenced by the Hindu deity Hanuman, a monkey faced god. Hanuman is among many things, the patron god of martial arts, meditation, celibacy and scholarship and is the quintessential Yogi archetype.

In the Kabbalah both gods are attributed to the sphere of Mercury, which symbolically makes perfect sense and visually does too since all three gods carry staffs.
