The Knights Templar where an ancient Catholic military order founded in 1119. The group formed in order to protect pilgrims traveling to Jerusalem, then ended up inventing an early form of banking and amassed incredible amounts of wealth and power. Then at dawn on Friday the 13th, October 1307 they where officially bisbanned and burned at the stake after being accused of worshiping Baphomet.
It is said the remaining members recreated the order under a new name, The Order of Christ. Since that time many organizations have drawn inspiration from and modeled themselves after the Knights Templar, such as modern Free Masonry!
Freemasonry has incorporated the symbols and rituals of several medieval military orders in a number of Masonic bodies since the 18th century at least. This can be seen in the "Red Cross of Constantine," inspired by the Military Constantinian Order; the "Order of Malta," inspired by the Knights Hospitaller; and the "Order of the Temple", inspired by the Knights Templar. The Orders of Malta and the Temple feature prominently in the York Rite.
