The term Sylph was first coined by Paracelsus, a 16th century physician and alchemist, as a name for the spirits of the air. In the "Liber de Nymphis" of the "Philosophia Magna", Paracelsus discusses the characteristics of the Sylphs, which are among many things, said to be closest to humans compared to the other 3 elemental creatures because sylphs move through the air like humans do (whereas undines move through water, salamanders move through fire and gnomes move through stone). Today we still see echos of the legend of the sylphs in the archetypal fairy; a small, gentle, humanoid creature with wings that flies through the air. In some magickal traditions, such as the Rosicrucian's & Hermeticists, it is believed one can open their vision to see the spirit world, at which point it is suggested to make contact with the elemental beings of each plane in order to work miracles. Since sylphs are air elementals, they rule over all matters relating to the intellect.
